Snow has been reported as low as 300 metres in parts of Taihape and inland
Hawkes Bay, with 20cm or possibly more having already accumulated in some areas
above 500 metres. Further significant snowfalls are expected for parts of the
Central North Island High Country from Tongariro National Park across to the
western ranges of Hawkes Bay, including Taihape through to late Monday. Another
10 to 20cm is likely in areas above 600 metres from this evening through to
Monday evening. Another 5 to 10cm is possible down to 300 to 400 metres through
to Monday morning, however the snow level is expected to gradually rise up to
600 to 700 metres by Monday afternoon. People in this area or intending to
travel through the region (especially the Desert Road, State highway 4 through
National Parks,Napier-Taupo Road and Napier-Taihape Road) should be aware that
further significant disruption is likely, and to check the latest conditions
before attempting any journey.
