Whakapapa:Update following Arson

Things are moving along well following the arson attacks at Whakapapa in February. Clean up of the Knoll Ridge Chalet and Cat Shed sites has happened very quickly with all the debris that is easy to demolish and remove now gone. All that’s left are concrete slabs and concrete block walls. Check out the before, during and after fire photos below.

Repair work on the Waterfall Express top terminal is almost completed and we expect to allow public access to the lift again from Monday 30 March.
What next for 2009?

Temporary facilities will be constructed in time for the 2009 winter season which will consist of:

* At the old Knoll Ridge Chalet site a one level café will be constructed which will cater for 70-90 people inside and 150-200 outside
* The Schuss Haus at Hut Flat will be re-opened and will cater for approximately 50 people inside and 100 outside
* In the Top O’ Bruce Plaza area a caravan will be added and the addition to the deck in front of Lorenz’s Bar & Café, which is being constructed now, will seat approximately 60 people
* Additional ‘Portacom’ type toilets will be located at the old Knoll Ridge Chalet site, Hut Flat near the Schuss Haus and in the Top O’ Bruce Plaza area.

New Facilities

* We have now ordered new Kassbohrer Park Bully and Winch Groomers to replace the two front line groomers that were lost. The groomers will be delivered in time for the start of the 2009 winter season
* Though subject to a full consent and approval process, planning for the construction of the new buildings is well underway. We expect them to be completed and ready for use in the 2010 winter season.
