Mind Games

Last weekend Koan introduced us to THE GAME which originated in Ohakune over the summer out of boredom and to stop people rating themselves/pay out your buddies.
The rules are simple; players are not permitted to say the word MINE along with the recently added word TEN, if one is caught saying either of these words its ten press ups there and then, no matter where you are! (Koan got me on the deck at the café up the hill).
e.g. 1) “hey that’s a dope jacket, who owns that?”
2) “Its MINE, dope aye?”
1) “TEN, (technically one should say 4 plus 6 or TEN in another language to avoid themselves having to do press ups)
2) ”F%$K

. The only way to get out of THE GAME is to consecutively complete 300 press ups. Saturday shit got gnarly with me ending up doing excess 200 including 30 whilst I was in bed.
Watch your mouth!!

Opening Day @ Whakapapa

Well the season if officially underway with both Whakapapa and Turoa now open, Turoa has top to bottom (but limited) and good old Rockapapa has the Rock Garden open thanks to Sky and his snow making crew!
Our drive down from the beloved concrete jungle of AK was along one with all the issues with Sam Dows G ride “Roger” had blowing a head gasket.Even our fluro pink duct tape roof repair kept ticker leak free! yeah boy!
But we got down all were safe, cheers to Pam & John for the use of there awesome mountain pad! Even if it was a little cold for Kens fragile flanges.
Koan came over from his bro's lodge in Ohakune for some snow slide time with the old crew,
Opening day was pretty casual, not much snow cover but we decided to hit Whakapapa as Turoa would have been packed out with all the Mardi Grass crowd and we i know what that means, but no lines at Whakas, ride on to lifts, blue skys, and no wind, dont get much better than that! even if it is only the dutty Rocky.

A few new crew already this season with the addition of Guy (did last post), Ray Ray on the left and Ken with his Bird Man Gang hand symbols on the right!Oh few things Ray Ray has a mean mo! and ken seams to get embarrassed around super sexy punters...Caught up with some old crew like "Master Park Shaper" Duffy, and Kentos, old mate Newy's back in town and Dirty B Rad. Any ways the aim of the game was riding so hers a few clicks of Koan and Ken getting rad!
A good day was had keeping it lazy easing into the season enjoying the feeling of cramped boots and wide stances! Koan got some dope corked 5's and rodes, hes been cranking Snowplanet so he never forgot how to ride, the rest of us spent our time jibbing about keeping it buttery. Ken who told us he had only been snowboarding a handful of times, started throwing down with some gnarlly speed and front 3's out of no where!
All and all a super fun day with some new and old crew.
And good old ticker cranked all weekend proving it is a true mountain goat!
Sunday was shit, raining and uber windy, but it has been snowing so lets hope it keeps coming!Sorry for the lack of riding clicks but hey its early days!

Peace

Down & Out

With this being my cherry popping post l thought I’d write about a lil incident that occurred on Friday evening.
On Friday we had planned to gap down the line and get amongst opening weekend at Whakapapa. After jump starting Sam Dows car and watching him disappear into the distance we finished loading ticka up and were ready to join the congestion that is Auckland’s motorway system. This of course is after a quick drive by of dirty bird and swinging by Juno’s house to tax some more tie downs and play with his new optimus prime mask.
Just after Mercer lurking in the fog and sticking out like a pair of dogs balls we spotted and all too familiar sight. The conversation in cab went something along the lines of this:
“Surely not”, “Nah that can’t be Sam Dow”, “he left like an hour before us”,” Maybe he stopped off to see wifey”, “maybe he stopped off at the botanical gardens?”
Like something out of a Fast and the Furious film I dropped several gears, doubled the clutch, activated the nitrous oxide system and caught up to the white elephant known as Roger. Sure enough hunched over the wheel there was Sam Dow, looking shocked and at the same time with a grin from ear to ear.
He then followed us to the BP where we pulled over to give him some head phones as his stereo had decided to stop working and listened to him insist that it was the traffic that caused him to take so long.

After a quick chin wagg we were on the road again with Sam Dow following us, but for how long?
Eventually after battling with fog resembling a Bob Marley concert we got to the Taumarunui turnoff. Sam was no where to be seen so we made the call to pull over and wait for him. Seven minutes, twenty nine seconds and a quick road side Melbourne shuffle/crip walk contest Sam Dow appeared around the corner. Now I don’t know if it was the fog inside or out but he almost drove right past us/into us (seriously I have no idea how he could miss Hagan dancing in the middle of the road), with a screech of brakes he managed to pull over. As if on cue a mixture of steam, smoke and bizarre noises started to erupt from Roger. After cutting the engine and analysing that the car was on Struggle Street we called the AA to come have a pep. Eventually the mechanic appeared and even bought his family along for the drive (not much excitement on a Friday night in Te Kuiti) to confirm that Sam had cooked Rogers head gasket. The only solution was to put a sweet rotary into it or fill up as many bottles of water as we could, turn the heaters on full and get Sam to drive as quickly as he could to poppa Dows in Taumaranui where he would leave the car and catch a ride with Kelvin to the hill the next day.

Rumour has it apparently Sam got it semi sussed and is probably still on his way to the Mount to get it fixed properly.

Sam Dow tried to cook a hangi in the bonnet.

Rome SDS Addictive Collection

All snowboard brands know that graphics play a major role at retail. Rome likes to give creative freedom to its artists, but at the end of the day, graphics need to match the brand and vibe of the board they’re intended for. Next winter, Rome is changing that with the release of the Addictive Collection, limited edition on art on select boards, bindings and boots. Three artists, Al Engelhart, Kyle Sauter and Erik Van Hauer each had complete creative freedom to put whatever graphic they wanted on a select set of Agent boards. While OG Rome Employee Michael Paddock designed the “Death of Creativity” binding and Libertine Mummy boot. Look for these to hit retailers for the 09-10 season.
